3-Act Structure
Act 1:
EXPOSITION- Consist of scene 1 and 2.
Scene 1- Caden and his mother are in the bedroom having small talk about the impending future. During this scene the viewer begins to see the close relationship that the mother has with her child.
Scene 2- Dominic and Maya are introduced for the first time. This scene sets up who the main characters are and what this animated short will be about. I purposely use Maya as the ice-breaker in the story, because of the Dominic and Caden are out of place and not really bonding as a family. Maya who has no problem with the big move and new family expansion takes advantage of situation and befriends Caden as a brother. During this scene I set up the environment that the characters will spend most of there time and small event instances to push the animation forward.
MAIN CHARACTERS- Caden, Maya, Dominic, Milli
INCITING INCIDENT- Scene 2
The brief flash events that shows that the characters getting to know one another which leads into the end of scene 2 where Caden intentionally leaves his brother behind to go to a party.
PLOT POINT- Scene 3
In the beginning of scene three Caden takes matter into his own hands and asks Dominic to clean up his side of the messy room right away. Doing this created tension and the need to prove the seriousness of Caden's turmoil of having dirty roommate. Caden began kicking things that were not his and Dominic's reaction made the situation worse for Caden.
Act 2: Confrontation
OBSTACLES- Scene 3 and Scene 4
Caden experiences three let downs. The first obstacle was getting Dominic to clean up his mess on ground and instead gets pushed to the ground. He later gets let down again when he tries to get Dominic in trouble for his actions towards him, but is told to help Dominic to clean up. Caden's third obstacle is when he tries to mentally build confidence and enough boldness to actually lay hands on Dominic through anger for payback. However he fails at that as well.
MIDPOINT- Scene 5
Caden and Milli (The Mother) finally catch up on their talk from scene 1 and reveals his problems to his mother.
Act 3: Resolution
CLIMAX- Scene 6
Caden and Dominic are playing hide and seek when Dominic finds Caden playing with Maya's bear during the game. Because of Dominic's jealousy, he begins to take the bear away from Caden possession forcefully. This event results in the bear that was dearest to Maya to rip apart.
DENOUEMENT- Scene 6
Caden and Dominic finally talk about there problems out loud to one another and finally come up with a truce that would be the first step to being more like a family.

ACT 1: SETUP
After initially meeting Dominic and Maya, Caden begins seeing the changes within his household. Dominic and Maya see Caden every now and then whenever his mother wants to have a family outing. Caden started to notice how his mother would share her attention with the other children and enjoy their company. Caden’s mother never looked so happy to be with another person since that very day.
Scene 1: The move-in
Caden is in his room laying on the bed looking up at the ceiling. When his mother walks in.
Mother- “Caden they will be here in five minutes. Are you ok?”
Caden - “Yes Mum. I’m fine. Just thinking.”
Mother- “I know this must be hard for you, but it’s not as bad as it seems. I want you to know, that this doesn’t change our relationship. Ok. I’m still the same mum.”
Caden - “I know, but… nothing.”
Mother-“What is it?
The door opens from downstairs.
Man -“We’re here!!!”
Mother-“I’ll get to the bottom of this later. Lets go downstairs now! There are a lot of things to do, so help mummy ok.”
Caden -“Ok.”
Scene 2: The Beginning
Caden and Dominic are now sharing a room together. It is split down the middle and it is very obvious whose side is which. Dominic is on his bed listening to music with earphones on when Caden walks in the door. Caden gives the what’s up nod and walks towards his bed. The only sound that could be heard was the loud music from Dominic’s headphones aiding to the evermore tension in the room. Dominic begins taking off his shoes and socks, throwing them on the ground. This will be a very long quiet scene starting out where Caden and Dominic sort of peek at one another. Then the camera moves towards the door where Maya peeks around the corner.
Maya -“Dominic. Mummy wants you.”
Dominic gets up and walks out passing Maya in the doorway.
“Cadi, do you like my bear? It’s my friend. Say hi Mr. Bear.”
Bear -“Hiee Cadi”
Caden -“Hi Mr. Bear.”
Maya walks in and leans on Caden’s bed.
Maya -“What is that?
Maya points at a game console.
Caden -“It’s my U-Box.”
Maya -“Can I play with your U-Box?”
Dominic walks in sort of bothered. Caden looks at Maya sort of surprised, than began pulling a box from under his bed.
Caden -“Sure! Let me show you my collection of games. I have Black Bullet, a shooting game, Speed Freak, a racing game, The Legend of Zillin. The Legend of Zillin is a really cool game. I’ve beat it almost 5 times.
Maya -“Wow.”
Maya moves closer to the games on the floor and bends over to look at all of them.
Caden -“I also have Toadder, a frog adventure game, Animal Story, and the all time best game of them all…Teenage Mutant Ninja Sheep’s!
Maya -“I like them all. But what’s a collection?”
Dominic-“He just showed you the collection sis.”
In an aggravated way Dominic turns his attention to pulling his headphones on.
Caden -“So which one do you want to play?”
Maya _”Mmmmmm…this one with Toes.”
Caden looks baffled by the way she said the title and catches on.
Caden -“The Toads it is.”
Stills of events fade in and take over the screen then fade out.
Mother-“Dominic, Caden, Maya! Come downstairs and help me!
Maya -“What do you need health with?
Mother-“We are going to make cookies! Wash your hands.
Stills of events fade in and take over the screen then fade out.
Mother-“That’s a really interesting shape you made Dominic keep up the good work.”
Caden -“How’s mine mummy?”
Mother-“It is Ah-Dorable Hun.”
Dominic looks at Caden and starts nodding. LOL.
Stills of events fade in and take over the screen then fade out.
Maya is crying.
Dominic-“Stop crying sis. You can hang out with us if you want to. Don’t cry I’ll get you some candy from the school when I come home tomorrow.
Caden -“Yeah Maya. We’ll get you some candy. You like candy?”
Mother-“What’s going on up there?”
Dominic and Caden-“ NOTHING!!!
Stills of events fade in and take over the screen then fade out.
Dominic and Caden are at school leaning on the lockers.
Voice1-“Caden your brother is so cool.”
Voice2-“Dominic you should come to the party this weekend.”
Voice3-“Caden make sure you bring your brother to the party.”
Caden begins to look upset.
Voice1-“Caden you should be more like your brother.”
Stills of events fade in and take over the screen then fade out.
Dominic and Caden are in the room and Caden is getting dressed.
Dominic-“Where are you going?
Caden -“Dominic I’m going out with some friends.”
Dominic-“Wait up, I just need to put on some shoes.”
Caden -“Maybe that’s not a good idea.”
Dominic-“Why not?
Caden -“I didn’t invite you, so just hang out here.”
Dominic-“What’s the problem?”
Caden -“No problem. I just did not invite you.”
Dominic-“Oh ok. Cool, I understand Momma’s boy.”
Dominic stays home.
The scene fades out to black.
The scene moves forward with still images to show time elapsed. Shot’s of the room getting cluttered and Caden looking upset about the living arrangements. After this short interlude finishes the last still becomes the actually movie again where it starts off again in the room again.
Scene 3: Some Trash
Caden walks in the room as usual and walks towards his bed.
Caden -“Dominic! Would you please pick up after yourself?”
Dominic-“It’s not that big a deal. Besides it’s on my side anyways. Stop bothering me about it.”
Caden -“Sighs.”
Caden begins kicking Dominic’s things on his side of the room.
Dominic-“Stop kicking my stuff!”
Caden -“I don’t want your crap on my side of the room.”
Dominic-“Crap? My crap isn’t bothering you. Just stay on your side of the room.”
Caden -“It’s not that big a deal, it looks like trash on the floor.”
Dominic gets on his feet and stands in Caden’s face.
Dominic-“Kick some more trash then”
Caden -“Like this right here.”
Caden kicks a shirt.
Dominic pushes Caden and he falls on the floor.
Mother-“What in gods name is going on in here?
Dominic-“Caden came in here and started kicking my things for no reason.
Caden -“Mummy, he has his stuff all over the place and he pushed me?
Dominic-“I told him that I was going to get it, but he couldn’t wait.”
Caden -“Not uhh! He said that it’s not a big deal and to ignore it.”
Mother-“Caden you know better than to kick things that belong to someone else. and Dominic,
we never put our hands on someone else. In this house we keep our things neat and off the floor. Caden help him clean up since the both of you can’t get along.
Caden -“But mum! Why do I have to help clean up his mess?”
Mother-“Because he is your brother and you know the rules. Apologize for kicking his things.
Dominic smiles at Caden.
Caden -“But mom he knows the rules too. He has been here long enough to know.
Mother-“APOLOGIZE.”
Caden -“Sorry for ki- - ckin your mess Dominic.
Mother-“What was that?”
Caden-“Sorry for kicking your stuff Dominic.
Dominic-“Sorry Milli. I didn’t want to cause trouble.
Mother-“Dominic, you never put your hands on someone. Apologize to Caden.
Mother looks at Caden with disappointment.
Dominic-“Sorry Caden.”
Mother-“The both of you will have to get along. We are a family, so start acting like one.”
Maya -“Mummy, the ovary is beeping”
Mother-“Ovary? The oven…”
Scene 4: Internal Struggle
Caden and Dominic, were left in the room looking at one another. Both are frustrated with one another at this point. However, Dominic turns away and sits on his bed leaving Caden still standing.
Dominic-“You may take a seat bro.”
Caden –“You still have jokes.”
Dominic-“What are you talking about buddy?”
Caden -“I’m not your buddy.”
Dominic-“Sure thing bro.”
Caden -“I’m not your bro.”
Dominic-“Caden would it be too much to ask you to hand me that CD by your foot?”
Caden -“I’m not your pet.”
Dominic gets up and walks towards his CD. Dominic stands for a brief moment then reaches for his CD. While he is doing this, Caden is trembling with the temptation to touch him. Everything around Caden turns black and white to portray his insightful feelings and thoughts.
Caden -“I should knock him out and show him whose boss. Why is he acting so casual? I don’t need this in my life. Dang my heart is beating fast. When he comes up, I will stick him in the stomach and then uppercut. No calm down. Do it now. What are you doing Caden? He’s just a little bigger than me.
Dominic stands back up, turns and walks away.
Caden -“Shucks… he got away. Dammit.”
Dominic-“Wake up.”
Caden snaps back to reality and leaves the room.
Fade to black.
Scene 5: Mom’s Concern
Caden is in the room by himself staring at an old family portrait when he suddenly hears steps walking towards the room. In walks Caden’s mother.
Mother-“Son.”
Caden -“It’s open mum.”
Mother walks in and sits next to Caden.
Mother-“Son. Will you help me with something?
Caden -“Yea…
Mother-“Well, I have this problem.”
Caden -“What is it?
Caden’s attention is more focused.
Mother-“Umm…I can’t help but think that my son hates me because of my decision to marry someone with children.
Caden’s facial expressions changes.
Caden -“Mum… (Looks surprised and sad), I’m fine and I don’t hate you.”
Mother-“Caden. I know you well enough to know when something is bothering you.
Caden -“Well…I…just have some thing’s on my mind.”
Mother-“Will you tell me son?”
Caden -“mmmuummm… I just miss dad. “
Mother-“(sighs) I miss him too. (giggles to herself) He always knew how to make me laugh. (Pause) he always knew how to make the best of a situation.
Caden -“He did.”
Mother-“He was a loving person.
Caden -“I just wish everything was back to normal.”
Mother-“ Is that why you’ve been having trouble getting along with Dominic?
Caden -“....
Mother-“Son (Pause), you have to give him a chance and start being friends.
Dominic is walking up to the door when he hears Mother and Caden talking.
Caden -“Mum (Pause), I’m not ready for a brother. Besides he doesn’t like me either.
Mother-“Caden! You don’t know that and that is the wrong way to think. Your father would not believe what you just said if he was here. Dominic probably doesn’t like you because you’ve been treating him like an outsider. Put yourself in his shoes, would you want him to treat you like you’ve been treating him?
Caden -“No…”
Mother-“I thought so, Caden we are one body now and we cannot function if parts of the body doesn’t want to work. Will you do me a favor and really try to put your differences behind you and give him a chance.
Dominic heard the last thing Mother said and he begins looking inward and the appearance of change fills his face as he turns and walks away.
Scene 6: Not you! Me!
Maya and Dominic are in the living room playing hide and seek. The scene opens up with Maya dashing across the screen.
Maya -“AAAAAAAAAAAA….AAAAAaaaaa…aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Sniff, Nooooo…I’m not getting caught!!! (Laughing and Giggling).
Dominic-“Ready or not here I come!”
Maya -“AAAAAAAAAA….AAAAaaaaaaaa…AAAaaa!!!”
Dominic-“Where did you go you little terd? Is this you right here? No… Maybe you’re over there. No… I’m going to find you MAYA!
Maya -“No you won’t Poopy!”
Dominic-“I got your poopy.” Dominic smiles.
While Maya is hiding a beetle walks towards her feet and Maya notices the bug right before it touches her foot. She screams and reveals her hiding space by jumping out in plain view of Dominic. Dominic looks at her and realizes this is his chance. During this moment Maya realizes what she did and begins running for her life in the opposite direction. The look and feel of the chase turns into something similar to Jurassic Park. Dominic finally catches Maya by cornering her.
Maya -“Let me go you poopy!”
Dominic-“Game Over. Ha ha ha ha haaa ha. Ok I’m going to take a break sis.”
Maya -“Okay Big D.”
Maya gets up and runs off. From the point of view of Dominic takes the viewer into the bedroom where Maya and Caden are sitting on the floor playing video games. Dominic becomes jealous.
Dominic-“I’m done with my break sis. Do you want to get back to hide and seek?”
Maya -“Ok.”
Caden -“But Maya we were playing Monkey Kong?”
Dominic-“Well she was playing with me first.”
Caden -“And you stopped playing with her so it’s my turn.”
Dominic-“It’s not your turn because I was just taking a break. My break is over now, so lets go Maya.”
Maya -“…ok.”
Caden -“Well, how about we all play hide and seek?”
Maya -“Yeah!”
Dominic-“No… you have to wait till our game is finished. We have always played it with just two people.
Caden -“Well, Maya doesn’t seem to mind me playing.”
Dominic-“Maya…. do you want him to play?”
Maya -“Yes he can play.”
Caden -“Since I’m getting in I’ll count first.”
Dominic-“No, I’ll count first. I always count first.”
Caden -“Ok you count first.”
They play hide and seek, switching out who counts. When the on last game begins Dominic counts and searches for Maya first because she normally gives her position away with her bear. Maya gave Caden her teddy bear during Dominic’s turn. After Dominic finishes counting, looks for Maya’s teddy bear first. When he spots the teddy bear he sneaks up on the exposed stuffed animal. As Dominic begins to catch who he thought was Maya he notices its Caden. Caden becomes surprised by Dominic’s sudden appearance and Dominic yells
Dominic-“Why do you have Maya’s bear? Give it here.
Dominic forcefully attempts to take the bear from Caden’s possession. The bear is forcefully squeezed and pulled back and forth until it rips and tears in half in front of Maya. With Maya watching and realizing what happened she became teared up.
Caden -“Let it go! Maya let play with it!”
Dominic-“You’re too big to play with her teddy bear.”
Caden -“That’s none of your business. Let it go”
Dominic-“It will always be my business. She’s my sister.”
Caden -“Stop you are going to rip her bear in half.”
Dominic-“ It won’t if you let it go, you terd eater.”
Maya -“NOOOOOOOooooooooooo. STOP YOU’RE GOING TO RIP MISTER BEAR!!!”
As Maya spoke those words the bear finally ripped and the boys tore it apart.
Maya -“Why did you two have to do that? I hate you both!
Dominic-“Maya… Maya please wait.
Caden -“Maya!
The screen fades out.
Caden and Dominic are in their room laying on their beds staring off into space. When Caden starts speaking to Dominic…
Caden -“What’s going on with us?”
Dominic-“I don’t know, but my sister is mad at me.”
Caden -“She’s mad at both of us.
Dominic-“It’s because you are trying to take my sister from me.”
Caden -“What about you! You’ve been buttering up my mom to get special treatment.”
Dominic-“I can’t help that she likes me more than you.”
Caden -“The same goes for my sister Maya. So you can just deal with it since you don’t want to fix the situation. Why is wrong with you?
Dominic-“I miss her.”
Caden -“Miss who?
Dominic-“My mom. She left my dad for another man and I miss her. That’s why I cling to my sister. I don’t want her to leave me, not even for another brother.
Caden -“I’m sorry bro, but I’m not trying to take your sister.”
Dominic-“But you won’t understand how I feel.”
Caden -“My father was killed in war. At least your mother is still alive. My father isn’t here anymore. Ever since then I’ve been the man of the house and I was happy with that. I didn’t want anybody else in our life. You’re not the only one unhappy around here. Listen…, I know we have our differences, and that’s ok. You may not like me and that’s ok. I don’t like you anymore than you like me, but we have to at least try to get along. Maya is placed in between our conflict. I propose a truce.
Dominic-“I’m listening.”
Caden -“We keep Maya out of our problems and share with one another what pushes our buttons, so that we will know what to avoid saying or doing.
Dominic-“That’ll do. But we have to make it up to Maya somehow.”
Caden -“Mom is really good at sowing things… lets see if she will help us.
As soon as Caden mentions his mother, she bust into their room already angered.
Mother-“You two are in serious trouble. Haven’t I told the both of you not to fight? You to better have a good explanation.“
Caden -“Mom, I can’t explain why we fought, but we just came to a mutual agreement, and we need your help.”
Mother-“Dominic is he telling the truth?”
Dominic-“Yes mother, and we wanted to know…”
Caden -“If you would be willing to sow Maya’s bear back together for us. We will apologize to her together and tell her how sorry we are.
Mother-“Is she everyone you’re sorry to? U haven’t come clean with me yet.
Caden and Dominic-“We’re Sorry.”
Fade to black.
Stills of them apologizing to Maya and everything working out in the end.

Caden walks in the room as usual and walks towards his bed.
Caden -“Dominic! Would you please pick up after yourself?”
Dominic-“It’s not that big a deal. Besides it’s on my side anyways. Stop bothering me about it.”
Caden -“Sighs.”
Caden begins kicking Dominic’s things on his side of the room.
Dominic-“Stop kicking my stuff!”
Caden -“I don’t want your crap on my side of the room.”
Dominic-“Crap? My crap isn’t bothering you. Just stay on your side of the room.”
Caden -“It’s not that big a deal, it looks like trash on the floor.”
Dominic gets on his feet and stands in Caden’s face.
Dominic-“Kick some more trash then”
Caden -“Like this right here.”
Caden kicks a shirt.
Dominic pushes Caden and he falls on the floor.
Mother-“What in gods name is going on in here?
Dominic-“Caden came in here and started kicking my things for no reason.
Caden -“Mummy, he has his stuff all over the place and he pushed me?
Dominic-“I told him that I was going to get it, but he couldn’t wait.”
Caden -“Not uhh! He said that it’s not a big deal and to ignore it.”
Mother-“Caden you know better than to kick things that belong to someone else. and Dominic,
we never put our hands on someone else. In this house we keep our things neat and off the floor. Caden help him clean up since the both of you can’t get along.
Caden -“But mum! Why do I have to help clean up his mess?”
Mother-“Because he is your brother and you know the rules. Apologize for kicking his things.
Dominic smiles at Caden.
Caden -“But mom he knows the rules too. He has been here long enough to know.
Mother-“APOLOGIZE.”
Caden -“Sorry for ki- - ckin your mess Dominic.
Mother-“What was that?”
Caden-“Sorry for kicking your stuff Dominic.
Dominic-“Sorry Milli. I didn’t want to cause trouble.
Mother-“Dominic, you never put your hands on someone. Apologize to Caden.
Mother looks at Caden with disappointment.
Dominic-“Sorry Caden.”
Mother-“The both of you will have to get along. We are a family, so start acting like one.”
Maya -“Mummy, the ovary is beeping”
Mother-“Ovary? The oven…”
Scene 4: Internal Struggle
Caden and Dominic, were left in the room looking at one another. Both are frustrated with one another at this point. However, Dominic turns away and sits on his bed leaving Caden still standing.
Dominic-“You may take a seat bro.”
Caden –“You still have jokes.”
Dominic-“What are you talking about buddy?”
Caden -“I’m not your buddy.”
Dominic-“Sure thing bro.”
Caden -“I’m not your bro.”
Dominic-“Caden would it be too much to ask you to hand me that CD by your foot?”
Caden -“I’m not your pet.”
Dominic gets up and walks towards his CD. Dominic stands for a brief moment then reaches for his CD. While he is doing this, Caden is trembling with the temptation to touch him. Everything around Caden turns black and white to portray his insightful feelings and thoughts.
Caden -“I should knock him out and show him whose boss. Why is he acting so casual? I don’t need this in my life. Dang my heart is beating fast. When he comes up, I will stick him in the stomach and then uppercut. No calm down. Do it now. What are you doing Caden? He’s just a little bigger than me.
Dominic stands back up, turns and walks away.
Caden -“Shucks… he got away. Dammit.”
Dominic-“Wake up.”
Caden snaps back to reality and leaves the room.
Fade to black.
Scene 5: Mom’s Concern
Caden is in the room by himself staring at an old family portrait when he suddenly hears steps walking towards the room. In walks Caden’s mother.
Mother-“Son.”
Caden -“It’s open mum.”
Mother walks in and sits next to Caden.
Mother-“Son. Will you help me with something?
Caden -“Yea…
Mother-“Well, I have this problem.”
Caden -“What is it?
Caden’s attention is more focused.
Mother-“Umm…I can’t help but think that my son hates me because of my decision to marry someone with children.
Caden’s facial expressions changes.
Caden -“Mum… (Looks surprised and sad), I’m fine and I don’t hate you.”
Mother-“Caden. I know you well enough to know when something is bothering you.
Caden -“Well…I…just have some thing’s on my mind.”
Mother-“Will you tell me son?”
Caden -“mmmuummm… I just miss dad. “
Mother-“(sighs) I miss him too. (giggles to herself) He always knew how to make me laugh. (Pause) he always knew how to make the best of a situation.
Caden -“He did.”
Mother-“He was a loving person.
Caden -“I just wish everything was back to normal.”
Mother-“ Is that why you’ve been having trouble getting along with Dominic?
Caden -“....
Mother-“Son (Pause), you have to give him a chance and start being friends.
Dominic is walking up to the door when he hears Mother and Caden talking.
Caden -“Mum (Pause), I’m not ready for a brother. Besides he doesn’t like me either.
Mother-“Caden! You don’t know that and that is the wrong way to think. Your father would not believe what you just said if he was here. Dominic probably doesn’t like you because you’ve been treating him like an outsider. Put yourself in his shoes, would you want him to treat you like you’ve been treating him?
Caden -“No…”
Mother-“I thought so, Caden we are one body now and we cannot function if parts of the body doesn’t want to work. Will you do me a favor and really try to put your differences behind you and give him a chance.
Dominic heard the last thing Mother said and he begins looking inward and the appearance of change fills his face as he turns and walks away.
Scene 6: Not you! Me!
Maya and Dominic are in the living room playing hide and seek. The scene opens up with Maya dashing across the screen.
Maya -“AAAAAAAAAAAA….AAAAAaaaaa…aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Sniff, Nooooo…I’m not getting caught!!! (Laughing and Giggling).
Dominic-“Ready or not here I come!”
Maya -“AAAAAAAAAA….AAAAaaaaaaaa…AAAaaa!!!”
Dominic-“Where did you go you little terd? Is this you right here? No… Maybe you’re over there. No… I’m going to find you MAYA!
Maya -“No you won’t Poopy!”
Dominic-“I got your poopy.” Dominic smiles.
While Maya is hiding a beetle walks towards her feet and Maya notices the bug right before it touches her foot. She screams and reveals her hiding space by jumping out in plain view of Dominic. Dominic looks at her and realizes this is his chance. During this moment Maya realizes what she did and begins running for her life in the opposite direction. The look and feel of the chase turns into something similar to Jurassic Park. Dominic finally catches Maya by cornering her.
Maya -“Let me go you poopy!”
Dominic-“Game Over. Ha ha ha ha haaa ha. Ok I’m going to take a break sis.”
Maya -“Okay Big D.”
Maya gets up and runs off. From the point of view of Dominic takes the viewer into the bedroom where Maya and Caden are sitting on the floor playing video games. Dominic becomes jealous.
Dominic-“I’m done with my break sis. Do you want to get back to hide and seek?”
Maya -“Ok.”
Caden -“But Maya we were playing Monkey Kong?”
Dominic-“Well she was playing with me first.”
Caden -“And you stopped playing with her so it’s my turn.”
Dominic-“It’s not your turn because I was just taking a break. My break is over now, so lets go Maya.”
Maya -“…ok.”
Caden -“Well, how about we all play hide and seek?”
Maya -“Yeah!”
Dominic-“No… you have to wait till our game is finished. We have always played it with just two people.
Caden -“Well, Maya doesn’t seem to mind me playing.”
Dominic-“Maya…. do you want him to play?”
Maya -“Yes he can play.”
Caden -“Since I’m getting in I’ll count first.”
Dominic-“No, I’ll count first. I always count first.”
Caden -“Ok you count first.”
They play hide and seek, switching out who counts. When the on last game begins Dominic counts and searches for Maya first because she normally gives her position away with her bear. Maya gave Caden her teddy bear during Dominic’s turn. After Dominic finishes counting, looks for Maya’s teddy bear first. When he spots the teddy bear he sneaks up on the exposed stuffed animal. As Dominic begins to catch who he thought was Maya he notices its Caden. Caden becomes surprised by Dominic’s sudden appearance and Dominic yells
Dominic-“Why do you have Maya’s bear? Give it here.
Dominic forcefully attempts to take the bear from Caden’s possession. The bear is forcefully squeezed and pulled back and forth until it rips and tears in half in front of Maya. With Maya watching and realizing what happened she became teared up.
Caden -“Let it go! Maya let play with it!”
Dominic-“You’re too big to play with her teddy bear.”
Caden -“That’s none of your business. Let it go”
Dominic-“It will always be my business. She’s my sister.”
Caden -“Stop you are going to rip her bear in half.”
Dominic-“ It won’t if you let it go, you terd eater.”
Maya -“NOOOOOOOooooooooooo. STOP YOU’RE GOING TO RIP MISTER BEAR!!!”
As Maya spoke those words the bear finally ripped and the boys tore it apart.
Maya -“Why did you two have to do that? I hate you both!
Dominic-“Maya… Maya please wait.
Caden -“Maya!
The screen fades out.
Caden and Dominic are in their room laying on their beds staring off into space. When Caden starts speaking to Dominic…
Caden -“What’s going on with us?”
Dominic-“I don’t know, but my sister is mad at me.”
Caden -“She’s mad at both of us.
Dominic-“It’s because you are trying to take my sister from me.”
Caden -“What about you! You’ve been buttering up my mom to get special treatment.”
Dominic-“I can’t help that she likes me more than you.”
Caden -“The same goes for my sister Maya. So you can just deal with it since you don’t want to fix the situation. Why is wrong with you?
Dominic-“I miss her.”
Caden -“Miss who?
Dominic-“My mom. She left my dad for another man and I miss her. That’s why I cling to my sister. I don’t want her to leave me, not even for another brother.
Caden -“I’m sorry bro, but I’m not trying to take your sister.”
Dominic-“But you won’t understand how I feel.”
Caden -“My father was killed in war. At least your mother is still alive. My father isn’t here anymore. Ever since then I’ve been the man of the house and I was happy with that. I didn’t want anybody else in our life. You’re not the only one unhappy around here. Listen…, I know we have our differences, and that’s ok. You may not like me and that’s ok. I don’t like you anymore than you like me, but we have to at least try to get along. Maya is placed in between our conflict. I propose a truce.
Dominic-“I’m listening.”
Caden -“We keep Maya out of our problems and share with one another what pushes our buttons, so that we will know what to avoid saying or doing.
Dominic-“That’ll do. But we have to make it up to Maya somehow.”
Caden -“Mom is really good at sowing things… lets see if she will help us.
As soon as Caden mentions his mother, she bust into their room already angered.
Mother-“You two are in serious trouble. Haven’t I told the both of you not to fight? You to better have a good explanation.“
Caden -“Mom, I can’t explain why we fought, but we just came to a mutual agreement, and we need your help.”
Mother-“Dominic is he telling the truth?”
Dominic-“Yes mother, and we wanted to know…”
Caden -“If you would be willing to sow Maya’s bear back together for us. We will apologize to her together and tell her how sorry we are.
Mother-“Is she everyone you’re sorry to? U haven’t come clean with me yet.
Caden and Dominic-“We’re Sorry.”
Fade to black.
Stills of them apologizing to Maya and everything working out in the end.

THE PITCH
THE STATEMENT
Family is everything except trouble-free and painless life conditions. Most families experience demanding circumstances and situations, which exposes the true nature of ones character. However, the amount of quandary that a family will endure never seems to be more than one can handle. An example of this is when two or more families merge into a single entity, which pushes the extremes of circumstantial millstones.
I have experienced the hardships of being in a combined family. I struggled with defining my sense of self, of place, and belonging. Negotiating and compromising were common practices that were essential to sustain peace. Maintaining past intimacies was difficult as well. Therefore, with these experiences behind me, I will create an animated short that uses my experiences as a reference for a narrative about two brothers and a sister who are merged together against their will.
In my narrative, the story is centered on a young boy named Caden, who struggles with accepting his stepbrother and stepsister as family. Throughout the short, the Caden and Dominic will gradually become more and more sincere about their true persona and eventually explode at one another. Maya the sister, who is in the middle, experiences the repercussions of her brothers’ differences and in her pain, brings the two brothers together. The brothers work together to come compromise and sort out their differences. The mother in the story is the voice of reason that plants seeds of wisdom to the two stepbrothers to help them in the end.
I will use Toom Boom to animate my characters and the environments in 2-D. The rhythm of the animation will be slow for a dramatic touch. For example I will use pauses or rests in the animation to provide a feeling of turmoil and uncertainty. The characters are designed with minimum detail, because the story is dialogue driven. Meaning that I will use simple shapes for the characters, since the story will be extremely dependent on what the characters are saying rather than what they are doing. I will use the cutout technique with blends of traditional animation to add fluency of movements.
